The Core young people’s centre in Southwell which was run by Nottinghamshire county council has now closed due to budget cuts.
A small team of volunteers are currently working hard to get the club back open as a voluntary organisation however more volunteers are needed to make this a reality.
The centre is a place for young people to socialise and learn new skills in a safe and friendly environment. One of the clubs regular members said: “Coming to the youth club has been fun. I have made new friends and have more confidence”.
Local resident Peter Herniman has been a volunteer youth worker for the Core over the last ten months and has taken it upon himself along with fellow volunteers to make a stand to continue the future of The Core.
Pete said: “Our aim is to provide a long term sustainable future for the Core. The Core has meant so much to the young people who use it and for it to close permanently would be a devastating blow for the community of Southwell. Our priority is to get the club back open as soon as possible.
“I am proud to say we have an amazing small team of volunteers already involved and together we feel The Core youth club closing for good is simply not an option. We have the facilities, training and support. All we need now is a strong voluntary committee and volunteers to run the sessions.”
