IT’S a special year for Lowdham Book Festival as the event celebrates its 20th birthday. “Hard to believe we know!” says co-organiser, and The Bookcase owner, Jane Streeter. “Looking back at the past programmes it is really amazing to see how far we have come from those early days, whilst at the same time it is clear that the focus has always been about ‘the story’ in all its many forms.
“In the planning of this very special birthday programme we have focused on two main strands – the Best of the Fest and the local connection. So we hope you love the mix of events on offer. It’s a delight to welcome back so many authors who have visited us before including Victoria Hislop, Joanne Harris and Catherine Bailey, and to introduce some new elements to entertain everyone!
“Of course, at the heart of the festival is our audience. The support we have had over the past 20 years is very sincerely appreciated, and we really look forward to seeing everyone in June for a celebration of our book-loving community!”.
Running for the whole of June, the Festival opens on Sunday 2nd June, 7pm at the Southwell Road Community Hall in Lowdham with Miranda Seymour and Lord Byron! Drawing on fascinating new material, Miranda reveals the ways in which Byron shaped the reputations of both his wife and daughter.
On Tuesday 4th June, 2pm, medieval thriller writer Karen Maitland is returning to talk about her latest novel, A Gathering of Ghosts, and to share her fascination for medieval myth and magic. C J Tudor and Victoria Hislop visit Southwell Library on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th June.
In addition to the many high profile authors, there will also be a lot of lovely events for children, including Pyjamarama! on Friday 7th June, 2pm. Enjoy an Evening with David Almond and Julia Green, two leading writers for young people on Thursday 20th June at the Minster School.
