Southwell Youth Cavern rebuilds

Before COVID hit many people in the town felt that we needed a place for the young people of Southwell and the surrounding area.

We identified a space in the basement of the Methodist Church, just behind the Saracen’s Head and had begun to put a team and policies in place before our plans, like so many, were thwarted by COVID.

We are now planning to have another bash at it, and we’d love you to be involved. Rev Peter Hibberts, Minister of Southwell Methodist Church explains: “we want the youth of the town to have somewhere safe that they can go and make their own, to feel welcome, to belong.”

Jess Everington, a Southwell mum to four said: “I’m really excited to hear of a space for our young people. Our youth are not our future community, they’re our community now and anything we can do for them, especially after the last two years, is great news. I’m excited for my children who will benefit in years to come and for the young people who will benefit now.”

We are hoping to get the Youth Cavern running one evening a week during term time for youngsters from year 6 up to year 9 starting in the summer term after Easter 2022. We are putting together two ‘adult’ teams: a helpers’ team on a rota, to help out at each session and a steering group of trustees who would be non-operational (front line) but would ensure that things were well taken care of, meeting a few times a year or when the need arises.

Will you help?

We are holding a meeting to put our teams together on Wednesday 23rd February, 7pm at ‘The Southwell Youth Cavern’ accessible from Prebend Passage. If you are interested please contact:
