This summer has seen Southwell Squash Club run an internal summer team squash league, the aim of this was to keep team squash players on their game for the upcoming season that kicks off at the end of September, it was well attended with more than 70 matches completed and 37 players participating.
The summer season was wrapped up on Monday 24 August when the Club welcomed two full time professional players for ‘A night with the Pro’s’.
Some 50 + spectators and players saw Declan James from Nottingham, world ranked number 54 and Josh Taylor from Leicestershire, world ranked number 247, take to the courts for a fun filled evening.
The event started with a coaching session with the junior members of the club. Both pro’s, along with club coach Kevin Emery, put on a free hour long coaching session supplying tips from the top!
Then it was the turn of the adult members to take on the pro’s. 12 members took on the two full time players in ten minute slots, with the aim of getting as many points as they could! ‘Ten minutes felt like thirty’ was the comment from first team captain Eddie Lager.
Then it was time for the main event, the pro’s took to the court to take on each other. After five closely fought games, James took the match 3-2 but there was still one prize to be won, a signed shirt from world champion, Nick Mathews. This was won by Junior player, Mitchell Bowcock, chosen by the players for his excellent questions. A fitting way to end a fantastically entertaining night of squash!
