On 4th October Penny Durance, Julie Stafford, Helen Jones and Barbara Garrett ran in the first women only marathon, the Race for Life Marathon in the River Lea Country Park. Participants were encouraged to wear pink and to have note on their back to celebrate and remember loved ones who had fought cancer. You can only imaging the emotions that others feel when they read these personal stories. Penny’s daughter Helen ran the race and knocked 15 minutes off her PB.

October is the month for the Worksop half marathon which is held in Clumber Park. The beauty of the autumn leaves must have gone some way to make the runners forget how much hard work running can be. 11 SRC runners completed the run. Father and son, Mark and David Edmondson-Jones ran the race in 1.21 and 1.26, with Steven Rice sneaking in between them at 1.24. First lady home was Jo Semmelroth, followed by Jo Harcombe.

Ant Rosevear and Chris Wales ran the Yorkshire marathon which took in the Minster and all the historic sites. Molly Campbell went further afield to Sardinia to compete in the Triathlon World Championships and came home with a silver medal.

There comes a time when you run out of excuses and just have to get going again. That time came last Saturday and I had a lovely run from Oxton to Epperstone with the club. It’s the company that makes the effort manageable and the run pleasurable. Many thanks to Helen, Barbara, Peter, Lorraine and Roy.
