A washed out April and early May has not dampened the spirit around Southwell Cricket Club as the season gets underway at Top Ground. All our Junior and Senior teams have been in action over the last month with plenty to be excited about as the summer gets into full swing.
Our youngest cricketers, playing Kwik cricket, travelled to Winthorpe CC to play in their first competition of the season. Being able to field two teams, our B’s lost to Newark but came back strong with a win against Caythorpe. Our A’s took the clean sweep, beating Farndon and Newark in two strong displays.
The Under 11s, playing their first season of hard ball cricket, showed great competitive spirit against Papplewick and Mansfield Hosiery Mills. Despite losing to both, they can be proud of their performances.
A win against Hucknall was an excellent way for the Under 13s to begins their season. Top performances all-round, specifically Ollie Whittaker (30* with the bat) and Danny Miller (2/7 with the ball) saw a win by 15 runs.
On Sundays, new skipper Will Ashworth has already seen both sides to leading a team. Losing heavily to a very strong Lambley team and a tighter loss to Calverton, but then following it up with an emphatic win against Farndon which boosted the spirts. Some huge positives as youngster William Rimmer made his senior debut, taking 3 wickets and Sam Barber hit the club’s first century of the season.
The 2nd XI started their season brilliantly with a strong win against Bingham but crashed back down with a loss to Stapleford and Coddington, despite some positive individual performances.
Jonny Butler’s 1st XI lost to Collingham in their first game but turned it around against Basford Mill to take a strong win in the sun. All fixtures and results can be found on our website, www.southwellcc.co.uk
We are also delighted to announce that we will be hosting a bank holiday six-a-side tournament and family fun day on Sunday 27th August. We look forward to welcoming you all to Top Ground for some entertaining cricket, BBQ, games and music and so make sure to save the date!
