MAY has been a busy month at Reach Learning Disability’s Flower Pod in Southwell.
On 10th May the Flower Pod Flyers took part in Nottingham’s first Super Soapbox Challenge in Old Market Square. The intrepid team of five transformed a soapbox into a vibrant wheelbarrow bursting with brightly coloured flowers. The inspiration? To reflect the joy and positivity the charity brings to the people they support every day. The project was a true team effort, with adults with learning disabilities at the heart of every stage – from designing to building the soapbox itself.
On race day, the Flyers were the only all-female team to tackle a challenging course beginning with a steep four metre drop! Despite a fall in round one, they completed the course with smiles and laughter. The team went home with the ‘Most Innovative’ award, celebrating their creativity and teamwork. They also raised an impressive £1,148 to support Reach’s work.
Also in May, Reach welcomed 35 volunteers from St James’s Place (SJP) who worked alongside clients to build a cob pizza oven over the course of a week, fully funded by the SJP Charitable Foundation. With Matthew Lloyd’s expertise (coboven.co.uk), the project brought people together to develop skills, confidence and connections.
The oven is a fantastic addition to the site and will enrich Reach’s offer, as well as social events and celebrations for their clients, staff and volunteers.
