Six cellos at Southwell Minster

LOCAL cellist, Sarah Huson-Whyte and five of her talented students, performed to a packed out audience in Southwell Minster as part of the regular Friday Lunchtime Concerts last month.

Over 200 people, including a GCSE class and some young cellists from the Minster School, gathered to hear the cellists play a variety of repertoire as solos, trios, quartets and sextets. The ensembles were made up of five of Sarah’s pupils; Euan Braddish from Lincolnshire; Edie Stell from Leicestershire; Anais Jauzelon from Stapleford and two pupils from Southwell – Stephen Frith and Audrey Cook.

Their varied programme included music from Bach’s Cello Suites, Corelli, Vivaldi’s Concerto for two Cellos, Tchaikovsky, Klengel, Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, a few sea shanties and a fun piece called ‘Hipster’ by the American cellist and composer Aaron Minsky.

Sarah was thrilled that these young and gifted musicians had the opportunity to play in such a wonderful building in front of so many people from the local community and further afield. She wishes the best to Euan who is now continuing his studies and the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department and Edie and Stephen who are both going to Chetham’s School of Music in September.

The next concert in the series is March 15th with local folk musicians Bernard and Jill Blackwell. For the full programme of lunchtime concerts visit: www.southwellminster.org/whats-on/all-concerts/ lunchtime-concerts.
