SOUTHWELL is celebrating the remarkable impact of its Community Food Hub, a project that has quickly become a lifeline for residents and a model of sustainability.
The hub was created to tackle two pressing issues: food waste and food insecurity. By redistributing surplus stock from supermarkets through the FairShare scheme, the hub offers affordable groceries to anyone who needs them, no questions asked. Membership is £1 annually and then for a small contribution of £4, visitors receive a bag of food worth several times that amount, helping families stretch their budgets while reducing waste.
This achievement is the result of strong local collaboration. Volunteers have worked tirelessly to set up and run the hub, working with Southwell Town Council and supported by Newark and Sherwood District Council’s community development team and funding streams such as the GLOW fund. Their combined efforts have transformed an idea into a thriving service.
The opening last month was a huge success, with every food parcel being claimed within less than an hour- a clear sign of the need within the community.
They also host a ‘Chatty Café’, creating a space for conversation and companionship, making the hub a place to strengthen social ties and reduce isolation.
Looking ahead the Southwell Community Food Hub will continue to operate at King’s Court Community Hub on the second and fourth Friday of each month, from 3-6pm.
