IN recent weeks it has been impossible not to notice the dangerous state of the roads in our
local area.
Damage to cars and other vehicles as well as incidents involving cyclists have become a regular occurrence, with people often being forced to swerve to avoid the ‘craters’, which have built up or opt for alternative routes. It is now hard to find an area which hasn’t been affected.
In response to this, local news outlets and a number of online groups have been highlighting the most dangerous areas as well as encouraging people to report them to the relevant authorities.
This includes Radio Newark with its Pothole Watch 2: Man vs Hole campaign, taking to the roads to report on the worst offenders. Whilst in Southwell a really useful Facebook page and Instagram account has been set up by a local resident, Annie Brafield.
Called ‘Safe Roads for Southwell’ (logo pictured above) the aim is to give residents a dedicated place to highlight the many dangerous potholes, hopefully alerting other people to the worst areas as well as building up a clearer picture of the scale of the issue in a structured, evidence based way.
As we went to print some of the affected areas had been receiving a temporary fix and plans are being drawn up by Nottinghamshire County Council for more permanent repairs.
