Planting for Future Generations

The Southwell and District Lions club recently visited Clumber Park to plant trees as part of an ecological project.

The Lions had been in regular contact with the National Trust at Clumber Park since taking part in a litter pick there in May 2019. There is a 10 year plan for the woodland areas of this extensive parkland, and the Lions were asked to assist with some of the current programme to plant 2,500 trees over the next six months.

In this case it was on an infill area as part of an ecological project. It involved planting six sweet chestnut saplings surrounded by 60 or so blackthorn and hawthorn whips.

Peter Brooker of the Lions said: “It is great to be involved with this historic landscape and take part in a project which future generations will be able to enjoy!

“We have a further tree planting project planned at Clumber Park in February and look forward to our involvement in more environmental activities this year.”

Although you might only have seen the Lions with Santa’s float or collecting in town, their activities continue throughout the year, planning events and discussing how to help our community.

They are only temporary custodians of the funds they raise, and any groups or individuals can contact them for help. The Community Service page on the Lions website now includes information on how to apply for funds and typical areas where they’ve given support in the past. Whilst the beneficiaries vary from year to year, since July 2019 39 per cent of the funds have been used for general local community activities, 25 per cent to support youth schemes and the balance has been used for health projects or to support overseas initiatives where Lions Clubs play a leading role.

If you’d like to put something back into our community by joining the Lions club why not attend one of the meetings. The business meetings are held on the second Tuesday in the month at the Reindeer in Southwell. Social events and speaker meetings are normally on the fourth Tuesday, but these are not always held at the Reindeer.
