Lowe’s Wong Lionesses

ON a bitterly cold Saturday morning, Lowe’s Wong Junior girls represented the Newark and Sherwood District at the Nottinghamshire County Finals.

Unfortunately, only four districts had played qualifiers which meant there were three games to decide the 2022/23 girls’ team for Nottinghamshire.

The first game was against Hillside from Hucknall. Lowe’s Wong played some scintillating football and battered on the door for the whole game. Maddison squeezed in a beautiful finish at the start of the second half to take the lead and reward the girls with a 1-0 win.

In the second game, Lowe’s Wong faced St Edmund’s of Mansfield. Lowe’s Wong created chance after chance and towards the end of the first half, Georgina skipped past several defenders before rifling it into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. In the second half again, Georgina bagged another goal which was the very least LWJ deserved for their efforts. Final score 2-0.

In the final game against Rushcliffe’s Tollerton both teams played some fantastic football and the game was worthy of a cup final. Crunching tackles but also skilful play made football the winner. Despite throwing the kitchen sink at Tollerton, they couldn’t quite get the win and their formidable opponents will be the ones to represent Nottinghamshire in the regionals. We wish them all the best in the next round.

The girls were an absolute credit to the school and the quality of football was sensational. It was their best performance for the school so far and second best school team in Nottinghamshire is a stunning achievement from some potential future Lionesses – Well done!
