International Day of Older Persons

International Day of Older Persons

In celebration of International Day of Older Persons (which officially takes place on Tuesday 1 October), Active4Today is running a series of free physical activity sessions during the week commencing 30 September that will showcase the many programmes we have on offer encouraging older people to keep active. We would also like to introduce two new members to the team.

As we get older it is important to stay active and our new Active Lifestyles Officer Ellie will be overseeing GP referrals, boosting corporate wellbeing in the local area, and getting out in the community encouraging people to get active in their day to day lives! She has a background in health and wellbeing, and has previously worked as a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer and Nutritional Advisor so the community are in expert hands. Ellie will also be delivering a chair based exercise class at Newark Sports & Fitness Centre every Tuesday at 1pm, which is a great way to build muscle, improve balance, coordination and strengthen the whole body. It also helps to reduce the likelihood of trips and falls and is a great way to meet new people! The session is suitable for all abilities so go and say hello during one of the free sessions below. You could also try Strokeability, a gentle weekly exercise class designed to support individuals recovering from the effects of a stroke or other neurological disorders. Our sessions provide individuals with the opportunity to work towards a healthier lifestyle, meet other people with similar issues and hopefully have some fun!

Kelly has just taken on the role of Inclusion and Engagement Officer (place) with Active 4 Today. She has a background in Dance development both out the community and in education settings. Having grown up in the district she enjoys running through some of our amazing green spaces/nature reserves and regularly volunteers at both local club runs and Junior parkruns. She is excited to get stuck into the role and start supporting sports clubs throughout the district, helping them to develop and grow in line with their wants and needs. The first task will be to spread the word about the Newark & Sherwood Sports Council and the Southwell & District Sports Forum by engaging with new and existing clubs ahead of their AGM on Wednesday 2nd October. These forums are open to clubs to share good practise, learn about new or existing funding opportunities and work with other local clubs who have shared interests. If you know a local club who may want to come along and get involved then tell them to get in touch!
