AWARD-WINNING Indian and Nepalese restaurant Gurkha One has been shortlisted for ‘Best Newcomer’ and included in the top 100 Indian restaurants in Britain at the prestigious British Curry Awards 2017.
The Nottinghamshire restaurant, which specialises in authentic fine dining, was put forward for the accolade by its loyal customers. Owner and head chef Jamil and his long-standing team of talented Nepalese chefs, recently attended a black tie ceremony on Monday 27 November 2017 when the accolades were announced.
Set up by Bangladeshi-born restauranteur Enam Ali MBE to showcase restaurants in the growing curry industry, this year’s event was hosted at Battersea Evolution in London. Sir Vince Cable MP, Chris Grayling MP, Khalid Mahmood MP and David Seaman all attended what is often referred to as the curry industry’s ‘Oscars’.
Jamil, said: “Being recognised by our customers as Best Newcomer at the British Curry Awards is a great achievement. We’re passionate about using high quality ingredients in all our dishes, which really represent Nepal and the beautiful flavours it produces”.
The shortlisting follows a string of accolades for Gurkha One, having been crowned ‘Restaurant of the Year: East Midlands’ at the English Curry Awards earlier this year and winning ‘Best Restaurant Overall’ at the same event in 2015. Jamil also scooped ‘Best Restaurant Manager 2016’.
Jamil says: “We pride ourselves on serving only freshly prepared dishes using alternative cooking methods and original Asian ingredients. Traditionally North Indian and Nepalese cooking involves two very different styles. We’ve created a fusion of the two coupled with several alternative cooking methods which makes our food concept completely fresh and unique.”
Gurkha One moved to its new premises at the Crown Inn pub in the village of Rolleston in 2016, having outgrown its original venue at the Paramount Hotel in Nottingham. It has built a reputation for authentic dishes accompanied by a very personal service.
