Members of Southwell Heritage Trust, in association with Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham, are embarking on an exciting initiative to promote the heritage assets, culture and natural history of Southwell and its surroundings.
In the absence of a traditional museum, where collections are sited inside a building, this project will provide a framework for an all-encompassing interpretation of Southwell’s past, present and future, through a variety of formats, both in situ and online.
Mike Kirton, speaking on behalf of the Southwell Heritage Trust, announced that the initiative has been named Discovering Southwell. Please read on to see how you can become involved:
Linking Place, Community and Culture
Discovering Southwell is an ambitious project to celebrate the people, places, history, culture and nature of Southwell. It is dedicated to encouraging a deeper connection to Southwell through stories, objects and shared experiences of its past, present and future. It is for everybody who lives, works, trades, visits and enjoys being in Southwell.
Over the next two months members will be out and about all over Southwell with activities and events: popping up at local schools, clubs, pubs and events, as well as taking to the streets. The group wants to know what makes Southwell special to you and to get your ideas to help shape the future of this project.
The Dean of Southwell, The Very Rev. Nicola Sullivan, speaking on behalf of the Minster said: “This is a welcome approach to showcasing Southwell’s remarkable heritage and demonstrating the importance of partnership working, as we seek to attract more visitors to the area and celebrate Southwell’s wonderful assets.”
Enclosed with this edition of The Bramley is a questionnaire for Southwell residents to complete and hand in at the Leisure Centre, or place in boxes available at Southwell Post Office, Co-op, Library or One Stop, by 10th June 2019. Alternatively, Southwell residents and anyone in the wider Bramley distribution area are invited to complete an online version at www.discoveringsouthwell.org by the same date.
Everyone is invited to our Information Event and exhibition at Southwell Library on Saturday 18th May from 10.00am to 2.30pm, where the project team will be pleased to offer you further information and listen to your views and questions regarding Discovering Southwell.
