Enjoy a local run or bike ride while raising money for local charity Southwell Care Project (SCP) that supports adults with learning disabilities.
To help keep essential services alive within our locality, charities have to rely on their community for support. SCP, soon to be renamed ‘Reach’ is no exception to this.
Anna Joyce, SCP’s Event manager said: “Many small local charities are facing drastic cuts from councils. Adult social services are being squeezed from all sides and SCP is feeling the pinch. These events are now more important than ever and really vital for the survival of the charity.”
Southwell Fun Run on Sunday 30th March starts and finishes at the charity’s Flower Pod accessible from the car park beside Southwell Leisure centre. Just walk up Park Lane, past the Rugby Club and head on towards the Cricket Ground.
The 3 1/2 mile course takes you over the gently undulating fields around NTU Brackenhurst Campus. It costs just £5 a person to enter or £15 for 2 adults and 2 children under 14yrs. All money raised will go to SCP, part of their ‘Give where you Live’ campaign.
Be on the start line for 10am and finish up with medals for the first three back in each category. Recuperate at Flower Pod with light refreshments before heading home for Sunday lunch with a bouquet of flowers for your Mum which you can purchase at the end of your run.
Or if you’re better on two wheels, how about taking part in Tonya’s Challenge on Sunday 11th May. This fundraising event has now been running as an off road bike ride for six years.
There are four different trail distances in and around Southwell to suit all abilities. The event can involve all sorts of members of the community: cake makers, marshals and people to help erect tents and of course off road cyclists of all shapes and sizes.
Hoping to attract over 1,000 riders for the first time, organisers are encouraging team entries from businesses and groups as well as individuals and have the benefit of generous support from Morgan Tucker Consulting Engineers from Newark to enable the event to offer a great day out.
The entrance fee is minimal compared with many other cycle events around the country: £15 for individuals, £12 for team members. The value is great; food stops all the way around on every route and a great spread at the end.
Every cyclist is encouraged to get sponsorship to enable funds to be raised to support SCP’s clients to live a life worth living. TSW Cycles of Woodborough is kindly offering a bike worth over £500 to the rider who raises the most money. There is also a team prize up for grabs.
