It was a fond farewell from many as Graham Goff retired from his butcher’s shop on Queen Street this month.
Having taken over the shop 14 years ago, customers have enjoyed a wide variety of expertly prepared, locally sourced meat.
With over 55 years’ experience in the trade, Graham originally ran a butchers in Warsop, followed by a restaurant in Nether Langwith for over 20 years before returning to the butchery trade as a consultant, assisting failing businesses. He then successfully set up and ran a Farm Shop before moving to the premises in Queen Street.
Graham was instrumental in establishing the town’s annual Apple themed shop window competition, which runs in conjunction with the Bramley Apple Festival. After winning the award for several years in a row, Graham moved over to sponsor and judge the competition, but continued to create some fabulous displays each year. Who can forget Bramley Wiggins, Bramleysaurus, Bramley Butchers and Bramley Railway to name but a few!
“I have been really touched by the number of cards and well wishes I have received from our customers,” said Graham. “Although I am sad to be leaving , I am looking forward to spending more time with Lynne and travelling in our caravan.”
The shop has been taken over by F.Doncaster Butchers, who already run 2 shops on Portland Street in Newark (established in 1920) and since 2010 in Claypole.
“We are a family-run business, with the same focus as Goff’s on providing high quality, locally sourced meats,” explained owner Robert Doncaster. “My Shop Manager, Wayne Mumford and I are really looking forward to getting to know the people of Southwell.”
“Robert is the perfect butcher to hand over my business to,” commented Graham. “He has extensive butchery experience and with his local faming connections, holds the same passion for the best quality meat as I do. Customers should also look forward to his new additions in the shop – the pies are excellent!”
Graham will also continue to run his very successful Butchery Masterclasses – which have seen over 220 people attend in the 2 years of their running. Bookings are now being taken for the November class. Please contact the shop on 01636 812305 for details.
