Southwell’s Saturday Market, a popular fixture for many years, offers residents and visitors much of their weekly shopping needs. Now, there are plans to introduce specialist Sunday Markets.
As many as 30 traders offer high quality fresh fruit and veg, fish and meat, often supplied by local producers, deli foods and savouries, cheeses, nuts, biscuits, breads and cakes, sweets, pet food, toiletries, shoes, cut flowers, plants, haberdashery, soft furnishings and food cupboard essentials.
Plans are afoot to expand the Thursday Market with a wider range of products. Look out for the bicycle and repair service, which now comes the Market Square, though not on a regular day.
On Sunday 13th May, gardeners, allotment holders and gardening services will be able to sell their products and services, from seedlings and plants to reconditioned tools and garden equipment at the ‘Green Fingers and Gardens’ Market.
Then, on Sunday 1st July, schools, preschools, families, community and young people’s groups such as the guides and scouts will be able to set up stalls selling preloved toys, books, games and clothes, including preowned school uniforms.
Southwell Town Council has managed the Markets since August 2016, when it took over from Newark & Sherwood District Council. The Council welcomes suggestions for improving both regular and ‘Special’ markets.
Future Sunday Markets include Ceramics on August Bank Holiday, coinciding with the Southwell Music Festival, and the Christmas Market on the Late Night Shopping Night in November.
