Cricket Club’s Big Bash!

Southwell Cricket Club hosted its annual ‘Big Bash’ event in August, bringing the Southwell community together to celebrate village cricket in glorious sunshine.

Teams from local pubs, including The Wheatsheaf, The Coach House and The Reindeer, competed for the Bert Pailing Trophy in the afternoon’s six a side tournament, accompanied by music and attempted witty commentary from the newly formed ‘media tent’. Congratulations to the eventual winners, The Reindeer, who beat a young Southwell CC team in the final. This was preceded by excellent Kwik cricket games between the Southwell and Farnsfield juniors, demonstrating the exceptional junior set up both clubs have worked so hard to build.

The day saw an excellent crowd build around Top Ground, drawn in by the promise of good food, a well-stocked bar and the chance of big prize monies from the now famous ‘donkey dump’. Renditions of Sweet Caroline and the YMCA on the boundary later in the afternoon typified the mood of a fantastic day, enjoyed by all.

Thanks must go out to those whose contributions were invaluable – all those from the club who worked tirelessly throughout the day; Boots for their incredibly generous contributions to the Tombola and raffle and finally Andy Ashworth on his quite remarkable walk around the boundary raising money for his chosen charities (see page ? for further details). Monies raised from the event have secured funding for a new electronic scoreboard and future improvements to the pavilion to support our junior and senior teams.
