Cricket Aid for Cancer Research

Southwell Cricket Club’s historic Top Ground will be hosting a six-a-side cricket tournament on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August commencing at 1pm in aid of Cancer Research. The format of this event will make for exciting viewing, with big hitting and some very athletic fielding!

The competition will consist of eight teams drawn from all the Nottinghamshire leagues and some very good players will be on show. The winner will be presented with the Bert Pailing cup, originally donated to a similar competition many years ago by Mr Pailing and recently found by his grandson Ian. The name Pailing is synonymous with Southwell cricket as both Ian and his father Barry, had spells captaining the club. Both played several 2nd X1 games for the county and Barry is an ex Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Colin Slater of Radio Nottingham will commentate on proceedings via the public address system and it is hoped other celebrities will drop in during the day. A raffle will be held and the pavilion bar will be open from 1pm. There will also be a “Donkey Drop”, rather difficult to explain in print! All that can be said is the donkey is led to a marked out grid on the ground where each square has been purchased by a member of the public. Wherever the donkey stops and leaves his mark, the person who paid for that square is the winner! Tickets for the Donkey Drop will cost £5 each with the winner collecting £1,000!

Entry to the event is free. It promises to be a most enjoyable day and will help a most worthwhile charity.
