Could you host a Child from Belarus?

On Saturday 29th July until Saturday 19th August this year Belarussian children will hopefully be coming to our area. They all live in the area of Belarus that was and still is affected by the fall out of the Chernobyl disaster. They will be coming here for some fresh air and decent food.

The charity Newark & Sherwood Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline which arranges the visit is looking for families to host a child (or two). All the children will be aged 8-10½ years. The gender of the child will be your decision.

The children only visit once so as to give as many as possible a break and an opportunity to experience new things such as visits to the seaside. They also go to the dentist as many have never sat in a dentist’s chair.

The dates can be split with another family if three weeks is not convenient. Full support and an interpreter is available to hosts throughout the visit. The difference in language is never a problem infact quite fun.

All costs of bringing the children over is met by the charity. This includes the visits they go on, which hosts and their own families are encouraged to join also at no cost. The children will visit Crookstone Barn in Derbyshire from 11th – 14th August where only the visiting children and volunteers stay.

Chairman of the charity, Robert Crampton said: “Southwell Fire Station is a great supporter of ours. The children visit the station and have a great time, getting quite wet in the bargain! In March last year the Fire Station held an open day which helped to raise funds to bring theses children to our area. The Southwell Lions are also tremendous in way of giving the children a magic show/party/disco and BBQ. We are indebted to these two groups and many more like them who give their time freely.”
