‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going!’ So quoted Ron Pickering , he of athletics fame, when megastar Daly Thompson was facing his awesome challenge in Los Angeles earlier this year.
An apt choice of words too for City’s first XI at this stage of the season. They certainly know what it means and are in the position of either taking up the challenge thrown down to them or being made to suffer at the hands of their opponents in the Save & Prosper North Alliance.
Up to Press, City had faced positive opposition in the shape of Rainworth and Plessey at home and a much improved Carlton away. All three results went against the Southwell team despite their efforts and near misses. More satisfactory results came against Gedling Miners Welfare and Boots Athletic at home when 2 points were justifiably taken from each team. When facing Players on the Park, the hard working lads had to wait until literally the last kick of the match from ‘Pop it in Pete’ Worrall before salvaging a point.
