City Cougars lift the Cup!

Southwell City Cougars, currently playing in the New Newark Youth League, have progressed massively since forming a little under two years ago. The hard work of the players and the management team – Thomas Shevlin and Darren Stevenson – led the side to the Under 10s Group ‘A’ competition final, known as the “David Sillery Cup”.

The match took place at the neutral territory of Stapleford Lane, Coddington, against Fernwood Foxes White, on the evening of Thursday 21st April.

The pre-match build up seemed like something from the FA Cup and after a tense opening the Cougars struck the first blow. A thunderbolt free-kick, unleashed from Luca Kemish’s right boot, saw the ball rattle against the crossbar and drop controversially close to the goal-line. A brave decision from the young referee put Southwell into the lead.

After skilful periods of play from both teams, Southwell managed to further their advantage through Freddie Corbett who calmly finished before the half-time break. The game remained tight during the second half and, despite Fernwood finding the net twice themselves, well-deserved goals from Harvey Kilborn and Oliver Rockley secured victory for the Southwellians. Final score: Fernwood Foxes White 2, Southwell City Cougars 4.

During the trophy presentation the organisers commended the impressive defending and goalkeeping displayed by the Cougars and it was indeed an excellent team performance with an important contribution from all twelve members of the Southwell squad.
