School Chess

In the Championship League, Lowe’s Wong Junior School travelled to Greasley Beauvale in February and managed a difficult win 3½  – 1½, difficult because only ten minutes from the end the result looked like being 2 -3.

However, at home to the High School there was no problem in winning a convincing 4-1. Away to Kingswell, Arnold, the match depended on Board 1, where Ben Harrision sacrificed a rook in order to promote a pawn to a quenn, and so helped Lowe’s Wong to a 3-2 win. Three reserves who played in a friendly match at the same time demonstrated the school’s strength in depth by winning 3-0.

County School Chess

On February 13th the Notts Primary School Chess Association held a Quadrangular Tournament at Keyworth against Manchester, Coventry and Walsall. The County called on Ben Harrision in the under 11s and Ben Wood, Christopher Hurt, Tom Sellick and Justin Russell in the under 9s section.

The results were:
Under 11s: Manchester 38 points, Nottingham 33 points, Coventry 32 points, Walsall 17 points.
Under 9s: Manchester 13½ points, Nottingham 21 points, Coventry 22½ points, Walsall 3 points.

The Lowe’s Wong boys won 9 of their games and lost only 4.
