Charity Football Match

ON MAY Day the Wheatsheaf Football Club played its annual Charlie Belcher Memorial match for the tenth time. This match is played in memory of Charlie Belcher, a Wheatsheaf player who died whilst goalkeeping for the Club 10 years ago.

Before the main 1991 Memorial game a fifteen minute each way match was played by past members of the Wheatsheaf United Club. Everyone enjoyed themselves but admitted to being a little stiff afterwards, only eased by liquid refreshment and sandwiches laid on at the Wheatsheaf Inn by hosts Larry and Di.

This game was followed by a keenly contested Charlie Belcher Memorial match between the Chairman’s XI (John Dennett) and a Wheatsheaf Utd. XI. The Chairman’s XI scraped home with a 2-1 Win, with Man of the Match Award being presented to Richard Merryweather for an outstanding midfield display with the Wheatsheaf XI.

Nearly 200 people enjoyed the two matches and £150 was raised for the Westgate Group.
