Career and camps with Andy Powell

SOUTHWELL rugby head coach Andy Powell talks about his career, the move to Southwell RFC and his excitement about establishing his own Rugby kids camps.

“I first began my interest in rugby at the age of 11. It was hard not to fall in love with the sport. I have played for my country, Wales and was selected to play for The British & Irish Lions, which was the pinnacle of my career.

“When I retired playing rugby professionally after 17 years, I began my coaching career in 2017. Since then, my biggest ambition and goal is to teach and help develop the techniques and skills that helped me. But importantly, learning these correctly and safely.

“There is no other sport that offers the same kind technicality, physical endurance or team bonding.

“I am the Head Coach for Southwell RFC and began in 2021. The Club has: three senior sides, five junior sides, seven mini/ midi teams and now they have started women’stouch rugby. Not withstanding all the team and sponsors who are involved day in and day out, to make it the best club! The Club has a wonderful Clubhouse and hasfantastic facilities available for all. I believe it is a true hub for the community.

“I am a father of two boys. They both participate in a variety of different sports. Neither of them is Career and camps with Andy Powell afraid of trying something new and getting stuck in! I had signed my eldest up to a number of Rugby camps in the past, but always left feeling slightly disheartened. He was learning the same repetitive skills and wasn’t being challenged. As both a coach and a father, I know exactly how I want my child to feel and what they should gain coming out of a camp. Most importantly they should be happy and have fun! I have coached a number of rugby camps up and down the country for a few years. Southwell has given me an opportunity and now is the time to begin my own camp! It’s going to be a fantastic new venture.

“My Rugby Camp ‘AP8 Academy’ this February half term, begins on Monday 13th February and finishes on 15th February for ages 7-13 years old. It is humbling how many parents have already signed their children up and I have already been asked when the Easter and Summer Camp will be announced! “Whether your child has an interest in rugby or not, it is a camp to suit all!

“If you haven’t already, sign your child up to AP8 Academy! If you have any questions or for more information please email me: ap.8.services@gmail.com

“Looking forward to see you all soon for what will be a great camp!”
