Our Country's Good
Our Country’s Good
A little-know historical event from the very foundation of ‘modern’ Australia will be dramatised by the Lincoln Mystery Plays Company in late September.
Bringing a new interpretation to the popular play Our Country’s Good, the company will be showcasing the skills and diversity of talent which made the 2008 Mystery Plays such an outstanding success in Lincoln and Southwell.
Our Country’s Good centres on the processes involved as the first colony of convicts to Australia in 1788 set about presenting a play under the direction of one of the officer-gaolers.  Based on historical fact, the play explores how participation in theatre transforms individual lives, questions the way in which society treats the less fortunate, and challenges attitudes notions of punishment and penal reform.
The play is humorous, tragic and totally engaging. It endorses and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in dealing with the sort of adversity, hostility and oppression within which the ‘First Fleet found themselves.
Further dramatic impetus will be established by silhouetting the image of a lone Aborigine scrutinising the new arrivals, reflecting the negative side of colonisation, whilst maintaining the integrity of the indigenous people.
Taking place on 22nd-25th September at 7.30 p.m. in Lincoln Drill Hall. Tickets available through Lincoln Drill Hall on 01522 873894 or at www.lincolndrillhall.com, priced £10 and £9. Early purchase and booking advised.
