Going to Holland in Southwell?
It’s countdown to the Gate to Southwell  Folk Festival with  Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra launching the event on Friday 1st June. This opening night will culminate with an amazing outdoor fire dance show by Mr Fox. Tickets can be bought separately for the Jools concert.
The  mindboggling line-up for this year’s event is complete, with more than 60 separate artists  and dance bands encompassing  folk and acoustic music from all over Europe and beyond.  Yurts in the adjacent woods will provide a magical new location for workshops, sessions and children’s activities.
The annual dance procession through Southwell town will take place at 10.45 on Saturday 2nd June  and 15 dance sides will be performing throughout the weekend including the infamous  Hells’ Angels of Morris Dancers – the Witchmen
In Southwell, several pubs will host concerts and sessions, and Sunday 3rd June will see a special French market  in King Street with open air concerts in the Market Square.
Family entertainment is also guaranteed throughout the 4 days. Highlights are the return of the spectacular Granny Turismo with their special Olympic Show. Their antics  2 year ago with high-speed shopping trolleys left the crowds truly amazed. Southwell Theatre Club will give 3 early evening performances of their community play – the Thief  of Time  and  on Monday afternoon, 4th June, we celebrate the Jubilee with a Mad Hatter’s Jubilee Tea Party led by the maddest hatter of all, Keith Donnelly. A hat making workshop, stolen tart treasure hunt and a myriad of other activities will unfold prior to the Tea Party.  We  welcome all residents of Southwell to come and join us.

Party at the Proms Success
Party at the Proms Success
The rousing Dambusters March from the Minster School Orchestra, with the audience waving flags in time, formed the finale of April’s Party at the Proms. An impromptu human flypast, substituted for the usual Spitfire. It was the first time the Southwell Lions had been involved in a Last Night at the Proms, organised in partnership with the Minster School Music Department and voted a great success. The main thoroughfare was decorated with buntings, and the concerts took place in various venues along the corridor. Making sure everyone knew what was about to happen was compere Nick Harding. Sharing their talents were the school’s swinging Jazz Band, ‘Gypsy Jazz’ from the Hot Club, dynamic Orlando Drive, vibrant Double Reeds, harmonious Chamber Choir and Girls Choir, an excellent Concert Band, and the sweet Southwell Soul. Pete Davis of Storytellers of Nottingham told tall tales, and an innovative human Fruit Machine hypnotised players. Playing the audience in and out, was the excellent group, Platform 58. Money raised from the event will help Minster School musicians on their musical tour of Strasbourg and Tuscany in July, and Lions charities.
The recent Easter Egg tombola was a success, and leftover eggs were excitedly received at Caudwell House.
The next event is the Lions famous Wine and Wisdom Quiz at Minster School Hall, Friday 11th May. Teams can be up to six people, and tickets £6.50 per head, which include Ploughman’s Platter and home made fruit pie and cream. Licensed Bar and Raffle.
